AOT is seeking a Chemist to join our facility in Jonesborough, TN .
The Chemist position conducts qualitative and quantitative chemical analyses or experiments in laboratories for quality or process control, or to develop new products or knowledge; analyze materials and processes, and perform laboratory testing research and studies to verify product problems and failures; perform experiments to analyze chemical compounds to explore the use of propellant, combustion and diagnostics chemical synthesis an characterization, material qualification and compatibility, environmental compliance and remediation activities, and manufacturing processes. The Chemist will design and execute test solutions, collect and analyze data and present the scientific results; participate in developing simulation modeling capabilities; and contribute to research proposals and leverage expertise to address issues in support of various programs of the organization, positions write technical papers and reports, prepare standards and specifications for processes, products and tests, and recommend improvements in analytical equipment, procedures and techniques. The Chemist position may serve as the AOT Chemical Hygiene Officer. The Chemist will perform receiving inspection on identified items and materials, will perform as the data package point of contact to compile, prepare, review and submit for AOT and Customer final review and may provide backup to the AOT Metallurgical Laboratory as required. This position will report to the Sr. Manager of Quality Operations at the Jonesborough Tennessee facility.
Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)
70% - Conducts laboratory research to acceptability of products; tests and analyzes a variety of materials for chemical composition or presence of specific substances; performs testing using established analytical procedures and specifications; carries out qualitative and quantitative analyses.
25% - Develops new methods, procedures, processes and protocols for special studies based on chemist input; compiles and evaluates test results; assists in reviewing reports on analyses, at a second level, after peer review, to verify accuracy of data an calculations and the appropriateness of methods used and to assure consistent results; prepares reports to document findings and recommendations as to processes, materials and projects; reviews and approves related inputs such as tests and experiments conducted by other laboratory personnel; coordinates with personnel in other disciplines to integrate findings and recommendations.
5% - May assign work to and train and direct lower level chemists, laboratory technicians, and support personnel as required.
Requires a Bachelor?s degree in an appropriate discipline and two (2) years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Requires working knowledge of and the demonstrated ability to perform Atomic Absorption (AA), Inductivity Coupled Plasma (ICP), Carbon Analyzer, Hydrogen/Oxygen Analyzer, Wet Chemistry Prep, Waste Water Testing and Analysis, and the preparation of standards for calibration. Successful candidate must be proficient in analyzing and preparing certifications for tested material and preparing and updating Chemical Laboratory Operating Procedures. Prior experience as a Chemical Hygiene Officer is desired.
Requires knowledge of appropriate rules, regulations and policies related to areas of assignments; current methods, procedures, good laboratory practices and protocols and instrumentation relating to qualitative and quantitative analysis, operational principles of chemical laboratory instrumentation and techniques, principles an methods of statistical analysis, current laboratory facilities, methods, materials, use of chemical laboratory process and test equipment, and specialized analytical equipment, data management and reporting the presentation of results to identify best practice, practices of general, qualitative, quantitative, organic, physical, and physiological chemistry, Environmental Production Agency (EPA) or other specialized testing protocols, principles of chemistry mathematics, statistics an physicals, and the ability to related these to laboratory assignments, project accountability ND cost management, risk analysis and quality control, quality assurance protocols and general laboratory safety. Safety and health standards (OSHA and TOSHA Laboratory Standard) related to laboratory testing procedures and practices, and various computer systems for laboratories and applicable software.
Requires ability to develop, modify and employ a variety of analytical methods, techniques and instrumentation in analyzing laboratory samples, maintain, calibrate, and modify instrumentation; apply the principles of chemistry, biology, physics, and mathematics to solve problems that involve the use of chemicals in products; plan and conduct research projects; prepare technical reports, records, and papers related to the work; oral and written communication skills, including giving presentations to all levels of customers and employees in the organization; perform calculations necessary for sample preparation, conduct laboratory testing in accordance with approved work instructions, analyze and interpret results of testing to identify concerns or issues; interpret and apply specific cases, provisions of laws, rules or regulations encountered at work; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others; independently develop and administer unique testing an research techniques an methods; maintain a variety of test and research records.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (i.e. ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds.Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner.While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (i.e. steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Some positions may require Respirator clearance up to and including the Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) Level A clearance. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto. Ability to distinguish colors may also be necessary. This position may be expected to work varying shifts and hours to ensure successful operation of activities in the organization.
